The term ‘learning journal’ refers to a collection of documents that are collated by your child’s Key Person and other practitioners. This provides a picture of your child’s development under the 7 areas of learning, as identified in the EYFS. Learning journeys consist of photos, artwork, shape and colours and evidence sheets. The folders are interspersed with observations and notes of relevant conversations or comments made by your child. Your child’s Key Person will match any observations to the EYFS curriculum guidance. The aim is to build a unique picture of what your child knows, feels and can do, as well as his/her particular interests and learning style. This can then be used to pinpoint learning priorities to help plan relevant and motivating learning experiences.
At Talbot View Pre-School we use paper learning journals. We provide parents the opportunity to look through the folder after the first 6 weeks of ‘settling in’ and then every half term your key person will meet with you to show you your child’s development in their learning journal. Your childs folder is accessible to access and engage with at any time.

We don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Our staff are trained to adapt their teaching to meet the needs of each child, using the EYFS as a flexible guide.
Our Key Person Approach focuses on developing strong, trusting relationships, as these are vital for emotional and cognitive growth. Consequently, responsive interactions with adults—whether through talking, playing, or simply listening—help to build the child’s brain and lay the foundation for lifelong learning.
